The Korean Studies Center at George Mason University (GMU) recently hosted an engaging session on November 17, 2023, featuring four of the current visiting scholars who presented their research encompassing diverse fields within the realm of Korean studies.
Sung Hyun Kim (Ministry of Justice in South Korea) delved into a compelling case study exploring narcotics investigations in both South Korea and the United States. His focus on advocating public health approaches to drug abuse, emphasizing rehabilitation over criminal charges, drew attention to crucial aspects of societal responses to this complex issue. Kim shared that his findings are part of an ongoing research paper, offering a glimpse into promising insights poised to contribute significantly to the field.
Hong Joon Um (Keimyung University) intrigued the audience with his research on "The Interaction between Externalization and Internalization: Focus, Topic, and Their Prosody." His exploration into this nuanced topic shed light on the intricate relationships between external and internal perspectives, accentuated by the influence of prosody.
Sun-young Son (Yeonhap News) presented a thought-provoking discussion on the "Responses to Media-generative AI." Focusing on cases from South Korea and beyond, Son articulated the various dimensions of artificial intelligence's impact on media generation, dissecting its advantages and disadvantages in the contemporary landscape.
Lastly, Myounghwa Sim (Myongji University) provided a quantitative analysis of "FOMC Meetings and the Korean Stock Market." Her research outlined the interconnectedness between the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) deliberations and the performance of the Korean stock market, illuminating vital correlations in the global financial context.
The diverse array of topics covered during this session showcased the depth and breadth of research within the Korean Studies Center. The presentations not only highlighted the expertise of the scholars but also underscored the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to understanding Korean studies in a global context.
